Most people come to Puerto Maldonado from Cusco but here are some alternatives, which could also be options for travel ideas after your trip to Puerto Maldonado.
There is a route between Puerto Maldonado and Rio Branco, Brazil operated by Moviltours. It is not currently bookable online. Check what days it runs at one of Moviltours’ stands in person or phone them. The location and phone numbers for their stands can be found on their website.
When weather conditions allow, there are buses between Puerto Maldonado and Juliaca, Peru. This route is with Empresas Wayra, who do not have a website – go to Puerto Maldonado bus station for information and tickets.
This journey takes at least 18 hours. The alternative is travelling to Cusco and taking a 1-hour flight to Juliaca from there.
From Juliaca, you can take another bus to Puno, Peru, half an hour away.
From Puno you can take a boat to the floating islands on Lake Titicaca and / or take a bus to Copacabana, Bolivia, next to the Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca.
If your plan is to go to or from La Paz, Bolivia, there are also direct routes between Puno (see above to get to Puno) and La Paz or you can get there from Copacabana (see above to get to Copacabana).
